lol is a bit of an unusual project, its just a thing in its own right, its not for anything or anyone in particular, its just an lp made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. the project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in hackney wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one). they wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as vhs tape, 70s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap argos catalogue guitars, and 80s drum machines.

i dont think i know, or heard of, anyone who share the same obsession in searching obscure disco records like kool dj dust (real name daniel savio). call him at any given time and he is in some flee market or second hand shop on the look-out for records. he even got an apartment just for his collection.
we talked about the idea of re-releasing >un-googable< music, old stuff that is not only very hard to find, but also so good that re-issueing it is an actual cultural necessity. dust tossed around with a few ideas and finally these three songs made the cut. we are very happy with them!
we hope you are too. we are also happy that we have the support on this release from so many djs. some of them being rune lindbaek, in flagranti, tim sweeney, horse meat disco, 6th borough project, parlour, dj rocca, bonar bradberry, parlour, hugo capablanca, cousin cole et al.

simoncino (aka nick anthony) from italian super edit label no more hits crosses the atlantic and finds a new home with on the prowls sub-label party breaks. what immediately stands out upon first listen is the production style, not being able to tell what is a sample and what has been replayed… much like tensnakes mega hit. the simoncino sound is firmly rooted in proto-house and 80s r&b. with ingredients like ancient drum machines, arpeggiated melodies, and cheap 80s pads, his concoction boils over with a certain cheekiness that makes listeners grin from ear to ear. all four tracks are subtle hits in their own right. excellent ep!

pional takes things in stride. and we like that. despite the enthusiastic response towards >a moot point<, his debut on our label, he has kept it low. locked in his studio, with his mic and his machines, recording non-stop but being extremely picky about what he chooses to release. thats why we are a tremendously thrilled about introducing you to >we have been waiting for you<, a song that has been blowing us away since the first time we heard it.

ed davenport is the next artist to have his say on len fakis figure spc imprint, taking his distinctive slant on late night body music into a new personal dimension. stretching out over 10 minutes, >take heart< throbs like a first love, dizzy on pheromones and the promise of kneetrembling basement action. fellow uk-import-to-berlin mama provides the telling vocal message. on the flip, eds >weird organ< is a straight up floor-troubling weapon - dark, taut and bristling with malevolent energy. perhaps his heaviest moment to date!?

introducing jos lieferink, amateur astronomer and electronic musician from the hague. since the mid 1970s phochos has been dabbling with organs and synthesizers, releasing an incredible number of cds and tapes on his own orion records label. phochos has long been a treasured secret, hidden from the general public in a maze of porch housing. secretely admired by the west coast cognoscenti, who finally decided to share him with the world, cause music, like, wants to be free, you know! >interface phrase 1< is a deep dutch techno banger, very much in the style of old ross 154. glaciers is a classic ambient phochos track from the early 2000 s. released on limited edtion icy cold clear vinyl.

clink closes out the year with a powerful double pack from tony rohr, titled >oddmatik<. this is his first solo release on clink since 2008, proving that the best come to those who wait. refining what is most popularly known has his >voodoo techno< sound, rohr has accomplished a mature collection of six diverse tracks via his virus b, nord modular, lead 2, an elektron monomachine and machinedrum. each piece has a different charisma, ranging from melancholy house to peak techno, achieving an absorbing variation of ideas that only a few are able to do so fluently. rohr is one of new yorks most prolific and interesting techno artists and has an impressive discography dating back to 1999. he has achieved popular releases on iconic imprints like cocoon, plus 8, drumcode, weave and podium, and works closely on production with american heavy-weights tim xavier, alexi delano and john selway. his charismatic and futuristic production style is ever-present throughout his music, and he maintains an unparalleled and dynamic sound while staying in tune with the ever-evolving techno and house genres. >oddmatik< summarizes tonys eleven-year journey in the studio and on the stage, and is some of his most compelling work to date.

after several hot tunes on worthy’s anabatic imprint, birminghams tom flynn joins the ranks of the dirtybird crew. i ve battle tested the a-side of this record all around the world. >catch that bird< is a rare mix of deep rooted funk whilst also sounding like a caribbean jungle track pitched down to 126. my favorite!
i d play this ep just on the strength of the a-side but i feel like a lot of attention will also be given to the b-side called >rhode island<. this is a classic piece of deep house with all the melodic elements of a dirtybird jam.
tom sent me at least 7 tracks before i signed these so the guy is certainly prolific and i expect to hear quite a bit more from this up and comer this year.

it is about time for a record from label founder dario zenker. dont ask why it took so long, but be sure it wasnt the last one. and what a record this is, after several great releases on labels like vakant, harry klein records or time to express, dario’s debut on his own imprint is another example for his unique and mature sound. his studio just as his music has grown over the years. 10 am sounds like an earthquake, raw and dirty, it builds up so much energy that even babensham starts to shake. farrel on the other side is best described as deep break beat techno. it shows the diversity of darios productions and diversity combined with a certain signature is a great mix in our opinion. so enjoy it or not, dance or put your hands in your pockets, share some love or be a hater, no matter what we like u.

the 4th release on their own imprint >pattern repeat< (resoe & kenneth christiansen) again delivers two killer techno tracks. the duo has really built themselves a solid reputation on the previous 3 releases, and gained support from artists like function, silent servant, pär grindvik, levon vincent, darko esser, reference, samuli kemppi. pattern repeat shows how the modern berlin sound really can get a twist of the new sound of copenhagen.

piemonts newest release on mbf is in tune with their new more house flavoured trax and twists it slightly.smoking cave conveys new jack feeling with cool vocals meeting each other... clashing nicely and creating a super funky rhythm, incorporated in their own piemont groove. the track is as multicoloured and multidimensional as it possible can be, genre bending, cool, combining so many elements of different genres... it explodes on the dance floor. house djs as well as minimal djs will like these house chords and ascending strings, in the best wild pitch manner.
